How to Find the Average

How to Find the Average –Whether analyzing data, calculating scores, or just curious about the middle ground, finding averages is a basic skill that can be useful in many aspects of life. The concept of average is also known as mean. Now let us understand the concept of average through some examples.

Understanding the Average

Average Formula = Sum of all numbers / Count of numbers

⦁ Collect data: Start by collecting a set of numbers for which you want to note the mean. This could be test scores, sales figures, temperatures or the age of the group, etc.
⦁ Add Numbers: Sum up all the numbers in your dataset. This is done by adding each number.
⦁ Count the numbers: Determine how many numbers are in the taken dataset. This calculation will be the denominator of your average calculation.
⦁ Calculate the mean: divide the sum of the numbers by the number of numbers. Here comes the average answer.

How to Calculate Average Percentage

To do this, you add all the percentage values and then divide by the number of values. Average percentage formula = (Sum of Percentage Values) / (Number of Values)

One Example: For example suppose you have the following five test scores.

1- 80%
2- 92%
3- 85%
4- 88%
5- 95%
To note the average percentage, follow these steps:

Step 1: Add up all the percentage values.
Sum = 80 + 92 + 85 + 88 + 95 = 440

Step 2: Divide the resulting sum by the number of values. That means there are 5 text marks here so divide by 5.
Average Percentage = 440 / 5 = 88% – So, the average percentage for these test scores is 88%. In this example, we add the individual percentages and then divide by the total number of percentages to get the average percentage.

How to Find the Average of 3 Numbers

To note the average of three numbers add the sum of the three numbers and divide by 3.
Formula: (Number1 + Number2 + Number3) / 3

Example: Suppose you have the numbers:
1 = 10
2 = 25
3 = 40

calculate the average as follows:
Average = (10 + 25 + 40) / 3
Average = 75 / 3 Answer = 25
Here average answer of 10, 25, and 40 numbers =25.

How to Find the Average in Statistics

Formula = (Value1+Value2+Value3+Value4+Value5…) / (Total number of values)

Example: For example, suppose you have a dataset that contains the scores of 5 students on an English test: 80, 92, 85, 90, and 88.

Step 1: Add up all the values: 80 + 92 + 85 + 90 + 88 = 435
Step 2: Calculate the average: Average = 435 / 5 = 87
Here the average score of 5 students in English tests is 87.

How to Find the Average of 2 Numbers

Formula = (a + b) / 2

Example: Let’s say you have two numbers, 50 and 25. To note the average of these numbers, you would follow these steps:

Add the two numbers: 50 + 25 = 75
Divide the sum by 2: 75 / 2 = 10
So, the average of 50 and 25 is 37.5.
